The theft of the Mona Lisa

 


The Mona Lisa was stolen on 22 August 1911 by Vincenzo Peruggia, an employer of the museum. He stole the Gioconda in a cleaning day. He took it out of the museum although it is more difficult to make wood disapeared.
Peruggia saved the picture in his house for 2 years and he tried to sold it to the italian government, but when the government discover the authenticity of the picture, they warned to the French authorities and Peruggia was arrested. One year after, Peruggia was released because he did it for nationalistic reasons.
